Samantha Plasencia Interview

Hello readers!! I know it's been a whole month since I've talked to you guys on here. Today I'm sharing an interview that I did with Samantha Plasencia. You may know her as one of the contestants from Project Runway Season 13. Samantha started Fashion Design here in San Antonio. I never really cared for Project Runway until she appeared on it. I actually kept up with Season 13 because of her. It was amazing seeing someone I know pursuing their dreams. I had the pleasure of meeting Samantha at San Antonio Fashion Week 2013. It was my first time going last year. I was so happy and grateful for the experience. I literally went to every event I could possibly go to. I noticed Sam and another local designer Jose Ramirez at the Kick Off Party. I begin talking to them and introducing myself. Samantha was so nice and down to earth when I first met her. She has a very welcoming personality.

Samantha showcased a collection this year at San Antonio Fashion Week. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to make it as planned. I was so bummed that I missed the show. So, I asked Sam if I could do this quick little interview with her! Her collection was sporty, urban chic. I read in another article that her inspiration was Alexander Wang and Balenciaga. I could definitely see that in the looks from the collection. I believe her choice of colors, pattern, and design construction were right on. It was a mix of sports and casual wear. I usually don't like sportswear but I really liked how she played with it. The cobalt blue in her collection really made the designs pop. I admired the use of the white visors too.

Why did you decide to be a fashion designer?
I never chose to be a fashion designer, its something that I was always really good at. Creativity was always something that came natural to me.

How did you go about your career after graduating from the University of Incarnate Word?
I've been working since the age of 15, I was working retail directly after college and went into visual display at Neiman Marcus and Julian Gold.

What was it like designing part-time?
Designing half my time has always been great. I would still get stuff done and its actually put me where I am today.

How does it feel to be a full-time designer now?
I've only been considered full time for about a month now and had been working on my collection for fashion week.

I absolutely love the style of your clothing design photos. How did you get connections with such talented individuals? (Photographers, Models, MUA's, etc.)
I wouldn't call it connections, you have to get yourself out there and ask questions if you want to be recognized.

Why did you choose to do the looks from your collection at Fashion Week San Antonio?
My FWSA collection was for spring and I basically designed what I felt at the moment, which has gotten a remarkable response! :)

Will you continue to do shows here in San Antonio while living in Austin?
I haven't given much thought yet, but I'd like to take steps forward in showcasing in different areas.

How would you describe your experience from being on Project Runway?
The best experience anyone can endure in the design world.

What advice would you give to an aspiring fashion designer wanting to be on Project Runway?
Know yourself as a designer. I've noticed SOME of the local talent always switching up designs, aesthetics, and what not. It's hard to see what they are about. Find yourself and know who you want to dress.

I'm so happy and proud of you Samantha! I can't wait to see more of what you have for us in the future! I hope you guys enjoyed this interview post.  I have the social links for Samantha below. :)
